What is an Inverter?
If you are new to solar energy, then it’s important to understand what an inverter is and its role in the solar energy system.
First off, there are two types of electric currents involved with solar energy:
- Alternating Current (AC) and
- Direct Current (DC)
Both AC and DC represent the current flow of energy in your system. DC always flows in the same direction, whereas AC changes direction periodically within its loop.
Solar energy is converted by solar panels into DC electricity. Since your homes and businesses need AC for electrical use (that is what most US household outlets are), then an inverter simply converts DC to AC power.
Second, it’s important to also know that RED Group installs two different types of inverters. Those are:
- Micro-inverters and
- Centralized inverters
A centralized inverter is used when there are no obstruction issues with panels. Micro-inverters allow each panel to operate interdependently of each other to help maximize production if there are shading or obstruction issues affecting individual panels.
