With rising power prices and increasing concerns about our environmental impact, many people are looking into solar panels as a viable power source. At Renewable Energy Design Group, solar is not just ‘what we do’, but it is also what we are passionate about. When you begin researching solar panels, the first thing you need to know is how they work. Our latest blog covers solar panels and hopefully answers many of your solar energy questions. If you have more questions or would like to request a free, no-obligation consultation, simply give us a call at 877-432-0857.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

PV (photovoltaic) panels are comprised of solar cells, a metal frame, and a glass sheet. In its simplest form, a photovoltaic panel converts sunlight energy into electricity. Below is a brief breakdown of the process and how solar panels work.

  1. Sunlight consists of photons, which are known as particles of solar energy. Each photon is composed of varying amounts of energy.
  2. When sunlight hits the PV cell, photons are reflected or absorbed. The absorbed photons “knock loose” electrons, generating an electrical current that flows through the circuit.
  3. PV cells are strung together into modules (panels), which can be combined into arrays, through which the electrical current flows as a direct current (DC).
  4. Inverters convert the DC output of PV arrays to alternating current (AC), which can be utilized immediately or fed into the utility’s electrical grid.

Do Solar Panels Work on Their Own?

While the PV panels are the core of solar energy technology, they are not the only factor in creating solar power. Other components of a photovoltaic system include:

  • Mounting hardware
  • Wiring
  • Inverter(s)
  • Optional: Batteries

Solar energy involves a complex system of components. That is why it is imperative to select a business that understands solar power in and out like we do at Renewable Energy Design Group.

What Materials are Solar Panels Made From?

PV panels are usually made from crystalline silicon wafers. While most are monocrystalline, there are also polycrystalline solar panels. These also utilize silicon but are created by melting silicon crystal fragments together. Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, making it widely available and affordable.

The silicon is layered to create a magnetic field, used as a semiconductor in the transfer of energy from the absorbed photons to electrons.

During our consultations, we will discuss your energy needs and help you determine which type of solar panel is best for you and your house or business.
